Kylie here! I’m super excited to bring you today’s post on our own Kara Swanson’s new novella, The Girl Who Could See!
All her life Fern has been told she’s blind to reality–but, what if she’s the only one who can truly see?
Fern Johnson is crazy. At least, that’s what the doctors have claimed since her childhood. Now nineteen, and one step away from a psych ward, Fern struggles to survive in bustling Los Angeles. Desperate to appear normal, she represses the young man flickering at the edge of her awareness–a blond warrior only she can see.
Tristan was Fern’s childhood imaginary hero, saving her from the monsters under her bed and outside her walls. As she grew up and his secret world continued to bleed into hers, however, it only caused catastrophe. But, when the city is rocked by the unexplainable, Fern is forced to consider the possibility that this young man is not a hallucination after all–and that the creature who decimated his world may be coming for hers.
The first thing you notice about the book is how gripping the writing is. When I read the first scene, I had goosebumps along with Fern. It’s one of those books that just completely draws you into the story, leaving you with a serious book hangover when you’re finished. You don’t want to put this book down. I was up at a ridiculous hour of the night reading this.
The characters. Oh, the characters. I LOVED them so much. Fern, Tristan, and the others that play roles in their story feel so real. Fern’s desperation and sadness, yet yearning for something real. Tristan is hopeful and determined. You admire the characters for their decisions and sacrifice. Plus, Fern and Tristan are simply adorable together. It’s a rather short book, being a novella, yet the characters have so much growth to them.
The story is just incredible. There’s everything you want in it. Action, suspense, mystery, and of course, sci-fi. The story unfolds in ways you don’t expect. I won’t say much about the ending, but I will say that I did not see it coming.
In conclusion, this is a truly great book. I cannot recommend it enough. Plus, I’m pretty sure this is going to take the spot as the prettiest book I own. (Just look at that cover!) I hope you decide to read it and I’m sure you will enjoy it.
