Young Justice Series: Kaldur’ahm

Kylie here! Today I’m here to talk about yet another awesome character from Young Justice: Kaldur!

Kaldur’ahm AKA Aqualad is a rather unique character in the Young Justice series. While characters such as Nightwing, Kid Flash, and Superboy all have extensive comic book backgrounds, he does not. Kaldur was created for the Young Justice series. He was later adapted into a slightly different comic book character, Jackson Hyde.

Kaldur’ahm was an Atlantean student of sorcery when his king, Aquaman, was attacked. Along with his best friend, Garth, Kaldur saved the king. The king then offered to make both boys his protégées, but Garth refused. Kaldur went on to become Aquaman’s sidekick, Aqualad. He has some pretty cool powers, such as the ability to harden water to form weapons, manipulate water, and create bursts of electricity.

Kaldur is one of the founding members of the team and their leader. Unlike the other members of the team, Kaldur is known for his calm and soft-spoken demeanor. He’s a commanding leader who knows how to both take command and listen to his team. He deals with some pretty tough stuff, but is always there to stand by the other young heroes and win the day.

He also has one of the most interesting character arcs. Because Kaldur is new to the DC world through Young Justice, we can’t look to the comics to figure out his past or his possible future. Everything we know comes from the show. So when season two came along, let’s just say it was a bit surprising.

While team-leader and trusted friend is the Kaldur we know and love from season one, a new side of Kaldur emerges in season two.

Or does it?

So if you’ve seen season two, then you know the plot is EPIC. If you haven’t, you probably don’t want to read this. Anyhow, Kaldur is revealed to be the son of supervillain Black Manta. It seems that Kaldur has betrayed his team and joined the dark side. But it’s later discovered that he’s in deep cover, and only a few members of the team have any idea.

I think this plot really makes Kaldur shine. He is willing to make any sacrifice for the cause. Even if that sacrifice is leading his closest friends to hate him and to work from within the very evil he’s been fighting against. He sacrifices his friends, his position, his image, and even his sanity for a time. But, luckily, all is revealed in the end and Kaldur is restored to his place as leader of the team.

And that’s Aqualad! Thanks for reading and be sure to check back next week for Kara’s post. Also, check out her post from last week on Conor Kent.
