Welcome back to The Fandom Studio! Today I’d like to tell you about some of the movies I’m most excited about seeing this year. Enjoy!
The Space Between Us
In this sci-fi/romance movie, a boy born on Mars discovers the wonderful sights and adventures of Earth. Gardner Elliot was the first child born on Mars. Though Mars is the only place he’s ever known, he’s always wanted to go to Earth. When he makes the trip, he embarks on a journey with his online best friend to find his father. But can he handle the gravity of earth?
Usually I judge all romance movies as cheesy and boring and seek out a movie with less ‘sap’. However, this one also has the term sci-fi on it, so… Plus, Asa Butterfield.
Kong: Skull Island
Starring Tom Hiddleston, this is the second movie in Legendary’s Godzilla-Kong series. It’s a reboot as well. Set in the 1970’s, it tells the story of a group of explorers sent to explore the deadly and gorgeous Skull Island. Not believing the tales of the monsters that reside there, they go on ahead into the island. Before long, however, they discover not only does the massive ape, Kong, exist, but so does a terrifying host of gigantic monsters.
Hiddleston plays the lead, Captain James Conrad. What’s really awesome is that Legendary is planning on doing a King Kong/Godzilla crossover movie set for release in 2020. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to this one.
Beauty and the Beast
Apparently live-action Disney princess movies are all the rage. This one stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast. It is also supposed to be a musical, just like the animated 1991 version. This plot sounds pretty similar to the original. Belle, a beautiful girl who prefers the world of books over the dreary and worldly life of the town is taken prisoner by the dreaded beast in exchange for her father. But she comes to love the enchanted staff of the castle and may have just pierced the cold exterior of the beast. But trouble surfaces when Gaston, a man intent on winning Belle for himself, leads a mission to ‘rescue’ Belle and kill the beast. Will true love break the spell?
I’m guessing. That’s usually how these things work. This is the third Disney princess remake Disney has done, following Cinderella (2015) and Maleficent (2014). Technically, Maleficent was about, well, Maleficent. But it is the Sleeping Beauty story, just told from a different angle. Anyway, expect more Disney live-action remakes in the future.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Finally, we’ve got a Marvel movie. So as the title implies, this is the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It’s starring Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan. The plot supposedly takes place two months after the first installment. The Guardians are struggling to keep themselves together as they journey through the galaxy searching for the truth about Peter Quill’s origins.
I heard rumors that one or more of the infinity stones will come into play in this movie as well. There’s also baby Groot and the frazzled Rocket, as seen in the trailer.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
I haven’t seen the third Diary of a Wimpy Kid installment. But the two that I have are high on my list of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The plot follows the ever precocious Greg as he convinces his family to go on a road-trip to his grandmother’s ninetieth birthday. But Greg has a ulterior motive. While using the innocent cover, he actually intends to attend a convention. One can assume many ridiculous yet hilarious misadventures and escapades will result.
This movie, the fourth in the franchise, is a little different than the first three. Zachery Gordon will not be reprising his role as Greg Heffley. In fact, the entire cast is changing. Personally, I am a bit saddened at this. But, I like to keep an open mind about these things. Also, this is not a reboot, but just a recasting.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
I personally love the Pirates movies. This is number five in the franchise, and brings about the long awaited return of William Turner. The story goes that Captain Salazar, an old rival of Captain Jack Sparrow, has returned as a ghost and is bent on revenge on Jack. Jack goes into the Devil’s Triangle (another name for the Bermuda Triangle) in search of Poseidon’s Trident, an artifact that will grant him power over the seas and defeat Salazar. Starring, of course, Johnny Depp, with the return of Orlando Bloom. Geoffry Rush will be reprising his role as Captain Barbosa. There are also the new addition of Brenton Thwaites as Will Turner’s son, Henry. Kaya Scodelario is also joining the cast. Unfortunately, Elizabeth will not be in the movie. But their son will, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
This DC Comics movie follows Justice League member Wonder Woman. The amazon warrior straight out of the Greek myths is kind of like the DC Captain America. You know, except the fact that she’s an immortal, and she fought in WWI, and other stuff. It stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.
The plot goes that Steve Trevor washes up on the island of Themyscira during WWI, the Amazon warrior Diana Prince finds herself leaving her home, determined to bring an end to the war.
This is not every movie coming out between now and June. I will also be doing a post on things between the months of July and December 2017, so stick around.
